What Are Straight Stair Lifts?
Straight stair lifts are a cost-effective mobility solution that can be installed within days for homes with straight flights of stairs.
Straight stair lifts bring convenience and customizability, as they can be fitted with upgrades such as powered swivel seats to assist with getting on and off the lift, higher weight capacities when needed, and powered footrests so that you don’t have to bend over at the top of the stairs to fold it up.

Straight Stair Lift Highlights
Stair lifts come with many customizable options, allowing you to choose the ideal lift for your situation. In search of a certain seat color? You’ve got options. Want to add additional safety features? No problem. Straight stair lifts are not a one size fits all solution. That’s why we provide ample stair lift customization options.
You may be wondering, “How much does a stair lift cost?” Because stair lift models, upgrades and configurations all influence price, no set stair lift cost applies to all situations. While the price varies, stair lifts are a cost-effective and convenient solution for those with mobility challenges. With a range of high-quality options to choose from and financing options that work with your budget, a great stair lift is within reach.
The ease of use and convenience that straight stair lifts provide is not limited to the indoors. Thanks to durable models designed to withstand the elements, you can access outdoor areas simply and securely with an outdoor stair lift.
Straight Stair Lift Rail Types
The rail that attaches to your stair treads can also be customized. At Arrow Lift, you have the choice of several different straight stair lift rail types. Our team of stair lift experts can help you to choose the right option for your home’s layout.
Standard Straight Rail Stair Lift
On a regular straight stair lift, the rail starts at the top of the stairs and extends beyond the bottom step approximately 15-18 inches, depending on the model. This is the most common type of stair lift rail.
Retractable Rail Stair Lift
If you have a walkway or hallway at the bottom of your staircase, a standard straight rail stair lift might cause a tripping hazard. Not to worry--we have a solution for that problem! Retractable rail stair lifts, or folding rail stair lifts, are designed so that the bottom of the rail folds up when not in use, eliminating the tripping hazard.
This option will work for a rider who is unattended. In other words, someone who lives alone can use a retractable rail stair lift independently. Examples of stair lifts offering this feature are the Stannah Starla, Stannah Siena 600, Bruno Elite and Bruno Elan.
Manual Folding Rail Stair Lift
While most folding stair lift rails operate automatically, there are a few stair lift models that can be installed with a manually folding rail at the bottom. Because it folds manually, the rider cannot raise or lower the rail, so an attendant is required. This is definitely something you’ll want to discuss with one of our stair lift experts, and it’s something that we encounter every day. Examples of stair lift models offering this feature are the Bruno Elite and the Bruno Elan.
Straight Rail Stair Lift Finish (Top of Stairs)
Both standard straight rail stair lifts and retractable rail stair lifts have what’s called an “incline finish” at the top of the steps. This means that the chair actually stops above the top step, so you completely avoid the stairs and walk out directly onto the upper landing of the staircase.
In order to make exiting the stair lift chair safe and easy, all straight stair lift chairs swivel toward the upper landing and then lock into place for a safe exit from the chair. If you would like to see how this works in person, one of our stair lift experts can demonstrate it for you at a local stair lift showroom.
