What Are Vertical Platform Lifts?

What Are Vertical Platform Lifts?

Vertical platform lifts (VPLs) are lifts that enhance the accessibility of commercial and residential buildings. A commercial vertical platform lift can accommodate an individual in a wheelchair or walker and travel between two stories. In locations where installing a ramp would be too cumbersome, a compact VPL is the ideal solution. With indoor and outdoor applications, making your location accessible is simple with a vertical platform lift.

Ideal for Public/Commercial Use

Vertical platform lifts are ideal in public and commercial buildings where accessibility is desired or required for distances of less than 14 feet of travel, and installation of a ramp or passenger elevator is technically or financially impractical.

VPLs are generally permitted to provide an accessible route in new commercial construction to spaces under 3,000 square feet, to stages, sound booths, courtrooms, seating areas of event centers and sporting facilities, and in applications where existing site constraints make a ramp or elevator infeasible. In existing construction, VPLs are an option when the travel is less than 14', and there is no Building Code requirement for a stretcher-size elevator.

Compact Design

Vertical platform lifts take up minimal space due to their open platform design with 42" sidewalls, as well as limited running clearances and a compact drive system that sits inside of the machine housing.

VPLs can be designed to fit inside a drywall shaft to minimize equipment cost or sit inside a manufactured enclosure so that the lift is self-contained and the work required by others is minimized.

Accessible platform sizes and code compliance for specific applications can vary by Code jurisdiction, so engaging with our team early in your project will help to ensure your design is compliant and compatible with our equipment requirements.

Options for Every Budget

Finding the right commercial vertical platform lift in your price range is possible at Arrow Lift. There are many types of vertical platform lifts that each suit different needs and budgets. In addition to location, height and project specifics, the type of VPL influences the overall cost. The four types of vertical platform lifts are:

Unenclosed VPLs

Unenclosed VPLs: An open platform option that is sometimes allowed in commercial settings. This option typically falls at the lower end of the price spectrum.

Shaftway VPLs

Shaftway VPLs: A lift that rests inside of a shaft. These are mid-range vertical platform lift options.

Enclosed VPL on the outside of a brick building next to a stairway

Enclosed VPLs: For increased customization opportunities, an enclosed vertical platform lift is a great option. Instead of a shaft, the VPL is fully encompassed in an enclosure provided by Arrow Lift.

Hybrid VPLs

Hybrid VPLs: If you are in search of a top-of-the-line option, the hybrid vertical platform lift is what you need. Users can enjoy the elevator-like interior of this accessibility-compliant solution.
