Stair lifts make it easy to restore safe access to a second-story or basement when you or a loved one are no longer able to safely navigate stairs on foot. Even better: Stair lift installations are almost entirely construction-free. Knocking down walls or reworking your home layout is unnecessary, so installation can typically occur in less than a day.
Regardless of how simple and quick your stair lift setup will be, knowing what you can expect is helpful. Here’s what you should know about the stair lift installation process. And if you’re wondering, “Where can I find stair lift installers near me?” we’ve got that answer for you, too.
Preparing for Installation
After buying a stair lift, preparing for installation is easy. Your Arrow Lift® Stair Lift Expert will have already measured your stairs during the free in-home stair lift consultation, as well as checked for a nearby power source, ensuring a smooth setup for installation day.
Before your Stair Lift Technician arrives to install the lift, be sure to remove any obstructions on or around the stairs where it will be installed. Your Technician will need roughly a 6-foot-by-6-foot area to stage materials and prepare for the job. It’s also a good idea to put any pets away to keep them from interfering with the work in progress.
Arrival
Once you’ve prepared the area, you can sit back and let your installer do the work. They’ll arrive at the set time, ready to go with all the necessary tools for the job — you don’t need to provide anything.
Upon arrival, your Arrow Lift® Technician will introduce themselves and confirm you’re ready for your stair lift installation. They’ll then look over the job site to take any final measurements and confirm they have everything needed for the job.
After completing the site survey, the Tech will bring in your stair lift and all necessary tools and equipment to get started.

Installation
The stair lift installation process varies based on the layout of your stairs. Most straight stair lifts can be installed in about three to four hours, while curved stair lifts usually take six to eight hours. Be sure everyone at home is aware they won’t be able to use the stairs during this time.
Your stair lift will be securely installed on the stair treads, not the handrail or the wall, to ensure a stable and reliable ride. If a handrail is on the same side, our expert Technician may need to remove it. If you still need a handrail, it may be possible to reinstall it on the opposite wall.
For safe operation, your stair lift should be plugged directly into its own outlet — no extension cords or temporary connections are needed. This setup ensures optimal performance.
Hand Off
Once the installation process is complete, your Tech will run a comprehensive performance check to ensure your new stair lift operates safely. They’ll inspect connection points, confirm the hardware is installed correctly, and run a test cycle to verify the lift runs appropriately.
Finally, your Technician will go over everything about your lift with you. They’ll show you how to operate it, and they’ll confirm the seat is set up comfortably for your regular use. If you have to leave during the installation, be sure you return before your Tech leaves, as this overview ensures you’re ready to use your lift safely.
