Installing an elevator in your home is an investment that brings a unique and luxurious addition to your living space. But how much does a home elevator cost? Each elevator is a one-of-a-kind solution designed and manufactured specifically for each home, so you’re not likely to find a one-size-fits-all answer.
However, a closer look at your home elevator options will give you a better idea of how much it may cost. A wide range of options also means you have the flexibility to choose what best fits your budget and needs.
In short, the cost of a home elevator depends on your needs, preferences, and home layout. Most home elevators cost between $35,000 and $50,000. Some basic systems can start under $35,000, while other custom applications can cost over $100,000.
We're ready to work with you one-on-one to find the right application, system, and desired level of finish and customization for you.
Exploring Elevator Design Options
Designing a home elevator can be a fun experience, and we believe your system should be custom-designed to fit seamlessly into your home. Our team of experts will work with you from start to finish to ensure your system complements your home's aesthetics and meets your practical needs.
The Cab
Think of the interior of your home elevator as a small room you can design to your taste. Whether you like a glass and steel look or a paneled wood cab, the design options are limitless, and Arrow Lift will work with you to create an elevator that looks like it was designed especially for your home.
The Fixtures
Home elevator fixtures, such as car operating panels, phone boxes, hall stations, lighting fixtures, handrails, and specialty items, are customized to match your vision. You can choose the options that best accent your home’s decor regardless of your finish preference.
The Doors
The door and gate are important elements that mark the entrance to your elevator. The type of door you choose will impact the elevator’s price. Many options are available to match your home’s design aesthetic while ensuring safe travel.
What Are Drive Systems and How Do They Impact Cost?
Drive systems are the heart of your home elevator's mechanical operations. Arrow Lift offers four home elevator drive system options:
- Roped Hydraulic Drive is a quiet, smooth drive system. Unlike outdated direct hydraulic drive systems, roped hydraulic systems can be used in taller spaces without drilling in the ground. Instead, the hydraulic piston is located inside the shaft with a pulley (or “sheave”) at the top.
- Inline Gear Drive uses a chain and counterweight system with a motor at the top of the shaft. It is among the most economical and space-saving options.
- Winding Drum Drive is a technology that has been used in multiple home elevator systems over the years, most recently in popular shaftless elevators. This system involves heavy duty wire rope that spools around a metal drum attached to an electric motor.
- Air-powered/Pneumatic Vacuum Drive is a newer technology in modern, luxury home elevators with a round, transparent shaft. In these home elevators, vacuum air pressure causes the cylindrical elevator car to glide up and down at a controlled speed within the shaft.
The drive system you choose can impact the cost of your home elevator. An air-powered drive is typically the most expensive, and the inline gear drive or winding drum drive is the most cost-effective. But an Arrow Lift expert can help you decide the best option for your home.
Construction and Home Elevator Cost
The construction costs to install a home elevator will vary depending on whether you are building a new home or remodeling an existing one. Installation typically requires foundation work, shaft construction, electrical power, light fixtures, trim carpentry, and finish work.
The top three construction cost factors for your home elevator are:
- Number of stories and layout of your home
- Type of drive system you choose
- Locations of your elevator doors (pass through, same side enter/exit, or 90 degree)
