What Is a Shaftless Elevator?
A shaftless home elevator is a compact elevator that provides easy movement between 2 floors in a home. Also called “through-the-floor elevators” or “through-floor lifts,” shaftless elevators don’t require extensive construction and can often be situated in tight spaces.
What Is a Glass Home Elevator?
A home elevator that has one or more sides made out of glass or plexiglass are often called glass home elevators. This allows you to admire your home through the glass windows as you travel from floor to floor. Shaftless and PVE home elevators are glass by default, and traditional home elevators can also be customized to have up to 3 sides of the elevator car and shaft be glass.
How Large Is a Home Elevator?
Shaftless home elevators come in multiple sizes, from smaller single-rider lifts to wider wheelchair-accessible options. Typical interior of a through-the-floor elevators is between 70 and 78 inches high, 29 to 49 inches deep, and about 21 to 33 inches wide.
Traditional home elevators, by comparison has a 15 sq.ft. interior cab and typically requires a 5′ x 5′ space for the shaft.
PVEs come in options with an interior diameter between 30 inches and 52 inches.
What Is the Weight Capacity of a Home Elevator?
Depending on the model, a shaftless elevator can hold anywhere from 350 to 500 pounds, vacuum elevators have a weight capacity from 350 to 525 pounds, and a traditional home elevator can carry 950 pounds.
How Many People Can Use a Home Elevator?
Shaftless elevators are designed to carry one or two people at a time. This depends on the size option and weight capacity you choose.
Traditional home elevators can often carry 3 or 4 people at once.
PVEs are similar to shaftless – they typically fit only one or two people.
Are Home Elevators Wheelchair Accessible?
Many residential elevators are large enough to fit a wheelchair. However, this depends on the type of elevator you’re looking for and its function/purpose.
Are Home Elevators Safe?
Yes. Shaftless, traditional, and PVE home elevators come equipped with a range of safety features, including alarms, battery backups, and systems to prevent the car from moving when the doors aren’t completely closed. All home lifts are also required to have a phone for emergencies.
All of our private residence elevator models adhere to the ASME Safety Code. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) establishes norms and standards to protect the safety and quality of mechanical devices, such as elevators.

During your free in-home consultation, an Arrow Lift Elevator Expert will take measurements, discuss options, and provide a quote. If you decide to move forward, our team will order the equipment and help coordinate any work by others that needs to be done before the elevator can be installed. Once all necessary prep work is finished, a team of Arrow Lift-employed, fully licensed Elevator Technicians will install the elevator and show you how to use it.
